私にとっての中景

本展覧会テーマである「中景」について、画家の視点で書いてくれと山下から依頼されましたが、さて、中景とはやっかいなものです。

彫刻家の友人から、「絵に出来る範囲ってどこまで？」と聞かれ、意外にも私は迷う事なく「あの山まで」と答えました。「あの山」とは京都市内を取り囲む山々を指します。
何を区切りに遠景、中景、近景と分かれるのか、明確な区切りはないと思いますが、「あの山」は私にとって遠景でもあり近景でもあります。しかし中景ではありません。なぜなのかと考えてみると、中景は動くことがないからです。
「あの山」は私との間に何十キロという距離をもって存在していますが、私の視覚と意思あるいは記憶の操作によって、私の最も近い所までやってきて近景と入れ替わります。しかし中景は中景のままです。
さらにやっかいなことは私も動かないということです。
動かない私を軸に、遠景、中景、近景が存在しています。遠景と近景はお互いに交換可能であり、私と中景は動かずただそこに存在しています。
私個人的な問題意識として、私の絵には触知性が抜けているということがあります。確実にそこに在るにも関わらず、抽象的で捉えようのない何かを欲するとき、視覚だけでは力不足ということです。

What the middle distance means to me

I was asked to write about “middle distance” which was the theme of the exhibition however it’s a tricky topic for me to write about.
My friend who is a sculptor once asked me “How much distance can you draw in one painting?” I immediatley replied “Up to that mountain!” meaning the mountains surrounding Kyoto city.
There is no definitive boundary between a distant view, the “middle distance” and our immediate surroundings and so that mountain, to me, is not in the “middle distance”. This is because I think the middle distance never changes.
When I look at a mountain, the space between me and that mountain is defined as a physical distance. My vision, intention or memory will replace or change it from a distant view to a close view. However the middle distance stays still and I don’t move either.
There are distant views, the “middle distance” and a close view surrounding me, a non moving object or axis. The distant view and the close view are interchangeable but myself and the “middle distance” remain.
Due to my self consciousness and problems I find regarding my work my paintings do not have a tactile feeling. Even though something may exist in a space when trying to understand an abstraction your eyesight alone is not good enough.
